This quintessential collector’s edition includes Jackie Wilson’s sensational debut LP, He’s So Fine, originally issued by the Brunswick label in 1958, and long unavailable on vinyl. Produced and arranged by Dick Jacobs, the album was cut to capture some of these memorable performances which had been exciting thousands of patrons of the R&circuit.

In addition to the original masterpiece, this WaxTime release contains 2 bonus tracks from the same period: “Never Go Away” and the joyful “I’ll Be Satisfied.” Despite his immense overall talent and influence, Wilson wasn’t a songwriter and his taste in music was often questionable. However, he did cut some outstanding sides, starting with “Reet Petite” in 1956, his first hit after leaving Billy Ward & The Dominoes (where he had replaced another legendary yet overlooked singer, Clyde McPhatter). Songwriters RoquelBilly Davis (who’s pen name was Tyran Carlo) and Berry Gordy, Jr. were two key individuals in Jackie Wilson’s initial success. Gordy would go on to form Motown in 1960, but his first big break in the music business came with Jackie Wilson and the aforementioned “Reet Petite” (a catchy song with an infectious energy), and other classic early sides included here, such as “Etcetera,” and “To Be Loved.” Wilson can also be heard singing one of his own compositions, “Come Back to Me,” which is the inspiration behind The Isley Brothers’ 1959 hit “Shout.” Another highlight from the album is the exciting tune “As Long As I Live.” Jackie’s vocal performance on the latter track is among his most powerful. One of the pioneers and most important singers in rock & soul music, there’s no better proof of Jackie Wilson’s talents than these joyful, consistent, stylish and exuberant recordings.
