This special release includes The Everlys’ second full-length LP, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. Originally released by the Cadence label in December 1958 (directly after their self-titled debut), the album has been long unavailable on vinyl. These splendid recordings were produced by Archie Bleyer (“without him there’d be nothing,” Don later said in an interview) and also feature Floyd T. “Lightnin’” Chance on bass.

In addition to the original LP, this WaxTime collector’s edition also includes 2 bonus tracks from the same period: “Sleepless Nights” and “Memories Are Made of This.” While the duo had gained acclaim as a rock & roll act, their sophomore release saw them exploring a raft of well-known country tunes, mixing traditional songs and tracks by Bradley Kincaid and Karl Davis. The brothers made the material their own with their characteristic close harmonies, which influenced everyone from Simon and Garfunkel to the Hollies. Highlights include fabulous country-folk versions like “Roving Gambler,” “I’m Here to Get My Baby out of Jail,” and Tex Ritter’s “Long Time Gone.”

This LP also includes superb, underappreciated tracks, such as “Barbara Allen” and “Oh, So Many Years,” as well as the Everlys’ adaptation of the old-time “Put My Little Shoes Away.” Music journalist Richie Unterberger noted that this album of traditional music, released at the peak of the duo’s commercial success as a rock & roll act, was “unexpected and ahead of its time.”
