Johnny Hallyday was France’s first and only full-fledged rock star. His appropriations of Elvis Presley and James Dean captured the French imagination, and he remains the only authentic French rock & roller – the only stage performer, above all, to hold his fans in the palm of his hand like his idols across the Atlantic.
Presented here are two of Johnny Hallyday’s most iconic albums: the 1961 masterpiece Tête à Tête and Retiens la Nuit (also known as Numéro 2). Both were originally issued as 10-inch records, and contain some of Johnny Hallyday’s finest moments. Five Hallyday hits from the same period have been added as a bonus, among them a rocky reading of Charles Aznavour’s “Il faut saisir sa chance” and “Souvenirs, souvenirs” (regarded as a classic of French rock).
Recorded in Paris, France, 1960-62.
