Howlin’ Wolf was one of the greatest characters and most electrifying performers in blues history. An imposing presence, blessed with a thunderous voice, he was one of the first artists to figure out how to make thoroughly modern experimental music by emphasizing the authentic, most primitive elements of roots music. This CD contains the long unavailable album Big City Blues, which presents a collection of Wolf recordings cut for the Modern label in 1951-1952. The LP includes three songs that had previously appeared on singles for RPM (a subsidiary of Modern Records) and a number of outtakes that weren’t released on 7” records. This material has long been a favorite among Wolf devotees. It is complemented on this collector’s edition with 15 bonus tracks, gathering a variety of other sides (among them obscure numbers) Wolf recorded between 1951 and 1962, making this the definitive edition of Big City Blues.
Recorded in West Memphis (Arkansas) and Memphis (Tennessee), USA.
