Ray Charles surprised ABC-Paramount producer Sid Feller when he asked him to compile a set of country and western songs. However, now that we have a panorama of Charles’ whole career, it seems hardly surprising. Country and western, as well as jazz, the blues, and all other American popular musical genres and subgenres were always part of the singer and pianist’s vast vocabulary. From New York City, Feller sent the recordings to Charles, who was living in California at the time, for him to choose.

Both volumes of the Country and Western set received warm reviews and escalated to the highest ranking positions. As his fifth LP release for ABC-Paramount, the first volume became a rapid critical and commercial success as it brought Ray Charles further mainstream notice, following his tenure for Atlantic Records. With the help of the album’s four charting singles, Charles earned recognition in the pop market, as well as airplay on both R&B and country radio stations. Modern Sounds and its lead single, “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, were both certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1962, as each record had shipped 500,000 copies in the United States.
