During his trip back to Philadelphia, in Mid-1957, John Coltrane decided to accept Thelonious Monk's offer to join the pianist's band and they played together at the Five Spot Café, New York, in a quartet format that also included bassist Ahmed Abdul Malik and drummer Shadow Wilson. Until the 1990's, a few studio tracks provided the only recorded evidence of Monk and Trane's musical collaborations.
