The group's sprawling origins derive from Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, of which The Awakening's Reggie Willis (bass) and Ari Brown (flute, tenor saxophone) were members of, and Young Holt Unlimited, an ensemble which touted Frank Gordon (trumpet) and Ken Chaney (keyboard) as part of its lineup.
