Though based in Denmark, SteepleChase has been recording American jazz with more care and savvy than many labels in the States. "But Beautiful," teaming vibist Joe Locke and pianist Kenny Barron, proves as much. An album as soft-spoken, understated and musically sophisticated as this probably would not have had much of a chance with a major American record company. Yet SteepleChase has presented this genteel duo honestly, allowing one hushed and expansive track to follow another.
