Charles Mingus was a renowned jazz bassist, composer, and leader, known for his powerful tone and rhythm. He drew from a range of musical genres and was heavily influenced by Duke Ellington. Mingus' music often incorporated dissonances and changes in meter and tempo, and he favored dictating parts to his musicians while allowing room for their own ideas. He founded Debut Records and contributed to the Jazz Composers' Workshop, and later founded his own Jazz Workshop repertory group. Some of his key albums include Pithecanthropus Erectus, Mingus Ah Um, Blues and Roots, and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. .
