5 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE
“Bassist/leader Charles Mingus cut some of his most exciting and rewarding recordings in 1960. Five selections feature the brilliant piano-less quartet of Eric Dolphy (on alto, bass clarinet, and flute), trumpeter Ted Curson, Mingus, and drummer Dannie Richmond, and these are highlighted by the bass clarinet-bass conversation on "What Love", and the interplay between the four musicians on the very memorable ‘Folk Forms No. 1’. Other musicians are added to six other selections (including the 19-minute jam “MDM”), and five other numbers feature trumpeter Roy Eldridge who is teamed with altoist Dolphy on three of the songs. This is a highly recommended set.” (Scott Yanow)

4 STARS ORIGINAL DOWNBEAT REVIEW : Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus
“Mingus is a musician of unquestionable power. He again demonstrates that he can do just about anything with his instrument. He and Richmond react beautifully together throughout and the interaction of the whole group is one of the salient features of the album. Recommended as an important document of the current scene.” (Ira Gitler)

In 1960, celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff called Charles Mingus to record a number of sessions for the new Candid label on which Mingus was given absolute freedom. All of the music from these sessions is on this set. Taped during the apex of Mingus’ creativity, they showcase such stars as Eric Dolphy, Roy Eldridge, Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, Charles McPherson, Paul Bley, Tommy Flanagan, Jo Jones, and Dannie Richmond. A session featuring Booker Little, Benny Bailey, Eric Dolphy, and Max Roach (but not Mingus), has been added here as a bonus.
