No doubt most of the people buying this box know that the music it contains is necessary, essential even, to any serious jazz collection, if not to life itself. But to spell it out for any who haven't got the word yet, Count Basie's pre-war band epitomized that core quality in jazz called swing. And saxophonist Lester Young was the first soloist who showed that it was possible for others to reach the incredible heights achieved by Louis Armstrong in the mid '20s.

Lester Young was in some ways the definitive jazz musician. He was the personification of the art of swing and a master of creative ballad interpretation. He was one of the early innovators who laid the groundwork for bop and was the principal, as it were, of the cool school. Most Lester Young collections are well worth investigating, simply because his recorded legacy is filled with exciting and beautiful moments.

This new box is a highly important document, if not comprehensive, as it tracks Young's ascent on the Basie rocket and his orbit as a dominant and influential leader.

In all, the set is jammed with 173 tracks. The exclusive booklet includes many vintage photographs (some unpublished) along with an appreciative essay by Loren Schoenberg and a discography that corrects errors in prior documentations.

You don't need Jazz Messengers to tell you this is classic music you have to own and listen to. But we'll urge you to order soon. As with Mosaic sets, it will only be offered for a limited time and never again.
