This editon contains Mose Allison’s complete first and second albums as a leader: Back Country Suite (Prestige LP7091) and
Local Color (Prestige LP7121). Performed in a trio format, both LP’s presented the title “Suites” composed by Allison on their A Side, while their B sides were a combination of originals and old standards. Allison, who is still alive and has just issued his last album in March 2010 at the age of 82, didn’t go unnoticed in his time, and both of his initial LPs were highly praised in Down Beat magazine.

DOWN BEAT original review: Back Country Suite
“This is an important record. Not so much because of the suite, which in itself is charming, fresh, and rooted in the blues, but also because Allison is a talent which bears watching. If his subsequent writing has the individuality of approach and the same earthy quality as in this excursion, jazz will have added another exciting voice to its roster of spokesmen. This deserves hearing.” (Dom Cerulli)

DOWN BEAT original review: Local Color

“Allison, one of the brightest young figures in jazz, is more pastoral in his approach to music than hot or cool. There is an element of contemplative calm in his playing and composing that makes his efforts warmly revealing and almost constantly significant. This LP is a worthy addition to any jazz collection, for the reflection of folk tradition in jazz and the promising ability of Allison.” (Don Gold)
