This CD presents the complete original LP Byrd in the Wind (Offbeat OJ-3005), Charlie Byrd’s fourth effort as a leader. Recorded at the beginning of his career, this album clearly shows Byrd’s unique amalgam of jazz, blues and classical music, using the unamplified Spanish guitar as a jazz instrument. As a bonus, Byrd’s second album as a leader, Blues for Night People (Savoy MG12116) – added here in its entirety – showcasing the guitarist.

original review: BYRD IN THE WIND
“Charlie Byrd plays both classical and jazz guitar and has been identified with the late great Django Reinhardt, who also played the same kind of nonamplified guitar but which Byrd plays with a more modern interpretive feeling.” (George Hoeffer)

original review: BLUES FOR NIGHT PEOPLE

“The jazz feel and interpretation is ever present. Byrd knows his instrument inside out –and he re-establishes that the Spanish guitar can play swinging jazz. This one undeniably is a must for all with the slightest interest in the instrument. (John A. Tynan)
