A consummate singer, Brook Benton was the early soul era’s smoothest crooner, combining his pop instincts with a storyteller’s nack. Since the late Fifties he racked up an astounding string of successes on both the pop and R&B charts, and seemed to do so effortlessly. This quintessential CD includes two of Benton’s finest albums, which were originally released on the Mercury label and have been long unavailable until now. Lie To Me: Brook Benton Singing the Blues (1962), chronicled his move into the blues and the soul ballad, while the brilliant Endlessly (1959), featured the classic title track (which became a hit single), plus sublime renditions of some standards from The Great American Songbook, such as “Because of You,” “Time After Time,” and “Blue Skies,” all delivered with Benton’s silky mellow baritone voice. These two soulful late-night masterpieces have been remastered and packaged together in this collector’s edition, which also contains 4 bonus tracks from the same period.
