The complete original Freddie Hubbard LP Groovy, a brilliant sextet effort recorded for the long defunct Jazzline label.

The session issued on the Groovy LP (originally produced by thelong defunct Jazzline label) was initially intended as trombonist Willie Wilson’s debut as a leader. This explains why he isfeatured as the only horn on two songs despite being in thecompany of such superb musicians as Freddie Hubbard, PepperAdams and Duke Pearson. However, both the album and Wilsonwere ill-fated. The album would be issued under the name of thegroup’s best selling artist Freddie Hubbard, and Wilson woulddie in 1963, shortly after these recordings were made. Hubbard, who was 23-years old by the time of this session, had begun hisrecording career in 1957 when he participated on the LPThe Montgomery Brothers and Five Others. In the followingyears he would appear as a sideman on albums by JohnColtrane (The Believer), Paul Chambers, Slide Hampton, EricDolphy (Outward Bound), Charlie Persip, Tina Brooks, J.J.Johnson, Hank Mobley, and Quincy Jones, among others.

Also featured are such stars as Pepper Adams and Duke Pearson.

PEPPER ADAMS, baritone sax
WILLIE WILSON, trombone
