When pianist Teddy Wilson made this recording in 1980, six years before his death, and at the age of 62, he easily displayed the advanced level of perfection that maintained all of his life as a supreme melodist, a master of control and touch, and calm commander of rhythm. He never recorded a dull or indifferent record. In fact, more than just about any jazz musician, his style remained immune to outside influences ever since the swing era. Here Wilson, along with bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Ed Thigpen, plays a dozen songs that he had performed with Benny Goodman during the 1935-38 period. Fun and swinging music played with his intact ability to surprise. This LP is a good way to make acquaintance with Wilson’s music, and should it lead new listeners back to his work with Goodman and his great solo and combo recordings, all the better.
