Born Adolph Johannes Brand on October 9, 1934 in Cape Town, South Africa and known in the later part of his career as Abdullah Ibrahim after his conversion to Islam, Dollar Brand (aged 86 at this writing) was one of the first worldwide known African jazz players.

His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church and ragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the subgenre Cape jazz. Within jazz, his music particularly reflects the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. The present album consists of songs performed live in a trio setting at Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, in 1965.
