Never Were The Way She Was exudes with two vital atmospheres: one that has this larger than life, beautiful and tranquil arpeggiating brilliance, and one that has a dark, dissonant and at times chaotic and industrial mood to it. However, both of these sounds are handled in the most flawless and subtle of fashions, and these vibrant yet haunting performances manage to truly bring the genius of the compositions and talent of the artists to life.

Something also very underlying that makes this record feel so much more cohesive is the feeling of narrative. In some unfathomable way, Stetson and Neufeld manage to tell cohesive stories purely through the articulation and structure of experimental, instrumental music, an utter skill that must be recognised.

Also, the experimentation showcased throughout this 40 minute experience is never overbearing and always feels correct for the context in which it finds itself. In total, this is a glorious work of orchestral genius and shows, particularly, Colin Stetson's inate ability to passionately pursue an original and creative vision.
