4 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE

Oscar Peterson's trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis existed from 1953 to 1959 and is well documented on records, but the appearance of this previously unreleased 1958 concert at Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre in 2003 was welcome news for fans of the pianist.

Buoyed by a receptive audience and always in the mood to perform to the best of their ability, the musicians outdo themselves throughout the concert. Highlights include lengthy explorations of "How High the Moon" (centered on Brown's tasteful solo) and Peterson's "The Music Box Suite," seething interpretations of two of the late Clifford Brown's best-known compositions ("Joy Spring" and "Daahoud") and two little-known Ellis originals (including the lovely solo ballad "Patricia" and the fast-paced "Pogo"). Add it all up, and any fan of Oscar Peterson will want to add this album to their collection.
