This CD presents the complete Zurich set of the Oscar Peterson Trio, comprised of Peterson, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. During the Zurich concert, Peterson showed off his virtuoso playing in two upbeat numbers (Bock/Harnick’s “Politics And Poker”- a rare selection from the musical Fiorello! - and Clifford Brown’s crowd-pleasing bop tune “Daahoud”). But these fast tunes were contrasted by two great, expansive, and beautifully arranged ballads (Dizzy Gillespie’s neo-baroque “Con Alma” and “The Maidens Of Cadiz” after Léo Delibes). Two medium-paced tunes (Duke Jordan’s “Jordu” and Ray Bryant’s Latin number “Cubano Chant”) completed the set. The complexity of the ballads demonstrates that Peterson’s musicality was not only the product of fast finger.
