Over the past decade, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock has steadily expanded her scope as a composer, devising new ways to inspire, organize, and locate improvised music. While she remains committed to spontaneous creation, her compositional ambitions have grown by leaps and bounds, evidencing a fevered imagination that shows no signs of cooling down.

Monochromes marks a new chapter in her oeuvre, insofar as she has written and designed detailed fixed-media works as a starting point for improvisations. Laubrock recommends, "To experience the music optimally, listen to 'Monochromes' in one piece and out loud."
