INCLUDES 2 BONUS TRACKS
This release contains Jackie Wilson’s sensational fifth LP, A Woman, A Lover, A Friend, originally issued by the Brunswick label in 1960, and long unavailable on vinyl. Produced by Dick Jacobs, it presents some of Wilson’s greatest studio recordings from the beginning of his career.
The album opens with the soulful title track. It also includes such well-known songs as the outstanding “Am I the Man” (which peaked at #10 on the R&B charts), the rocking “(So Many) Cute Little Girls,” the melodramatic “Night,” and the exultant soul numbers “One Kiss,” and “You Cried,” among others. Wilson is inspired on just about every track. There is no filler. He trills, he growls, he uses melisma, he skirts to the top of his range with his effortless ease and surprising dramatic effect. Jackie Wilson at his best.
In addition to the original masterpiece, this collector’s LP contains 2 bonus tracks from the same period: the touching “The Greatest Hurt,” and the joyful and bombastic “Swanee.” One of the pioneers and most important singers in rock & soul music, there’s no better proof of Jackie Wilson’s talents than these soulful, stylish, and consistently excellent recordings.
JACKIE WILSON lead vocals on all tracks, plus:
The Dick Jacobs Orchestra and Chorus, featuring:
Jerome Richardson (saxophone), Al Caiola (guitar), Dick Hyman (organ),
Don Lamond (drums).
Recorded in New York City, in 1960.
