The father of country-rock, Gram Parsons (1946-1973), pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, and moved even further into the country realm, blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other.
He recorded as a solo artist as well as with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, among others.Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless musicians, such as The Rolling Stones (he was close friends with the Stones' guitarist Keith Richards).
After Parsons' untimely death at the age of 26 due to a morphine and tequila overdose, his frequent duet partner Emmylou Harris helped to prepare the release of the posthumous album Sleepless Nights. According to AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine, "Sleepless Nights was certainly a labor of love and it's a worthy purchase for committed fans."
