Saxophonist Allen Lowe serves up a nicely evocative set here – music that's based on inspirations from older styles and forms, but which has a strongly modernist expression – as you might guess from Lowe's other recordings! Lowe himself plays tenor and alto – and some offbeat guitar on two tracks – and other players include Ray Suhy on guitar and banjo, Alex Tremblay on bass, and Kresten Osgood on drums – a spare group that allow plenty of space for blue-tinged reedwork from the leader, who's wonderfully expressive throughout. The final title, "At A Baptist Meeting", adds in contributions from many others – including Roswell Rudd and Ray Anderson on trombones.
