Personnel: BOBBY HACKETT, trumpet soloist on all tracks backed by large orchestra conducted by JACKIE GLEASON. All tracks recorded in New York between 1953 & 1960.
Between late 1953 and 1960, the famous actor, television comedian and host Jackie Gleason (1916-1987) recorded a series of best selling albums featuring Bobby Hackett (1915-1976) as a soloist. Gleason's passion for jazz is well documented on his various TV shows, where some of the main jazz men (including Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and many others) performed live. So, it's not surprising that, when considering the production of some records under his own name, Gleason called on the services of a renowned jazz soloist like Bobby Hackett to give some flavour to the performances. This was a very musically active period for Hackett, who recorded his celebrated album "Coast Concert" with Jack Teagarden in 1955 and fronted an adventurous sextet with reedman Bob Wilber in 1956-57. It was Gleason's idea to call Hackett when he was putting his first easy listening album together. He gave Hackett free rein to improvise over the melody, and a distant and fading coda of Hackett's playing closed many a Gleason number. Hackett was the only performer to be mentioned by name on Gleason's albums for several years. The Gleason-Hackett collaborations are in no way standard jazz recordings. They really belong to that category of light music that was known as "lounge music", and seen under that light they are truly effective pieces; gentle, kind and evocative. However, two elements converge to give these records a different and distinct dimension. First of all, the tunes selected by Jackie Gleason are among the finest jazz standards, with beautiful melodies and stimulating chord changes. Second, the presence of Bobby Hackett certainly gives the orchestral backgrounds a more jazzy feeling.
