5 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE
Filmed in 1962, the feature Lawrence of Arabia was based on the life of T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), a British Army officer renowned especially for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916–18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia.
Directed by David Lean and produced by Sam Spiegel through his British company, Horizon Pictures, the film’s screenplay was written by Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson. It stars Peter O’Toole in the title role and is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema.
The film’s Super Panavision 70 cinematography by Freddie Young was highly acclaimed, as well as the dramatic score by Maurice Jarre, which won an Oscar (one of the seven won by the film), and is reproduced on this CD. Jarre was virtually unknown internationally at that time and, when originally hired, he was to be one of three composers engaged to write the score.
