‘Hokum’ was a term that labels used to market ensemble recordings of songs with salacious lyrics, double-entendre and references to vice, one of the legacies of 19th century Minstrel Shows. There were many groups of black musicians in Chicago during the 1920s and -30s who used the name ‘The Hokum Boys’. This record was cut on June 27th 1929 in Richmond Indiana and features cover artwork by Robert Crumb.
