The debut album by the Canadian-American rock band Steppenwolf, first released in January 1968 on Dunhill Records. A true success from the start, two songs from the album, "Born to Be Wild" and "The Pusher", were used in the soundtrack of the iconic 1969 Dennis Hopper film Easy Rider. "Berry Rides Again" is a tribute to guitarist Chuck Berry.

The LP is about as raucous and powerful as anything put out by a major record label in 1968. "Born to Be Wild" became not only a chart-topping high-energy anthem for the counterculture but coined the phrase "heavy metal", thus giving a genre-specific name to the brand of music that the band played. The Don Covay soul cover "Sookie, Sookie" (released as a single by the group), got played on some soul stations until they found out that Steppenwolf was white. "Born to Be Wild" climbed to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968, and the album jumped to #6 on the Billboard 200 album chart that same year.
