Alice Coltrane’s 1971 concert at Carnegie Hall is released here for the first time officially and in full. It presents Alice Coltrane’s first Carnegie Hall performance as a leader, joined by an all-star band comprising Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McBee, Ed Blackwell, Clifford Jarvis, Kumar Kramer, and Tulsi Reynolds. They played four songs: “Journey in Satchidananda” and “Shiva-Loka” (from Journey in Satchidananda) and versions of John Coltrane’s “Africa,” and “Leo.”
This recording is a key document as it falls in the middle of a very fertile period for her developing an ever-evolving brand of spiritual jazz that bore her own signature as much as it did her late husband's influence. A period that produced three really impressive albums, perhaps the finest in her discography: Journey in Satchidananda (July-November 1970), Universal Conciousness (April 1971) and World Galaxy (November 1971), a truly remarkable period, necessary for anyone interested in the development of modal and experimental jazz. It is also art of the highest order, conceived by a brilliant mind, poetically presented in exquisite collaboration by divinely inspired musicians. This time frame is, arguably, one of the finest moments in jazz from the early '70s.
