Hal Russell was in his mid 50s when he recorded this, his first album as leader.
The members of his NRG Ensemble were about half his age. Hal was a masterful drummer and vibes player but his musical energies ultimately led him to trumpet and saxophones as well. Versatility, expansive wit, fearless exploration, wide repertoire, mastery of many instruments, a distinctive ensemble personality - these are Hal Russell's NRG Ensemble.
