Ethiopian keyboardist Kibrom Birhane has played alongside contemporary giants who include Kamasi Washington and Mark De Clive-Lowe – but he sounds even better here at the helm of a set of his own – a beautiful record that mixes older Ethio jazz elements with a cool, contemporary Cali vibe!

The record is definitely jazz, but the rhythms really push it past the ordinary – and the style is different than some of the Ethio funk projects that have come out in the past decade or so – more sophisticated, and more individual in spirit – with all sorts of wonderful lines on piano and organ from Birhane, in a combo with guitar and percussion, and some subtle use of light horns.
