MASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL TAPES

Epitomising the cool jazz subgenre, Night Lights is American baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan's whopping 28th album, and his first for the indie major Philips label in 1963.

A lyrical and laid-back affair, the cover depicts a skyline resembling New York's, but we'd rather liken the music to a late night Mediterranean scene. The title track, along with choice cuts 'Festive Minor' and 'Wee Small Hours', move through perfectly recorded, stereo-panned bossa nova and post-bop without stress. Ç

After the unjustifiably inflated prices of former represses, make sure you cop this one for a fraction; this reissue contains remasters by Kevin Gray from the original Philips tape vault, and an additional inser with photos and words by the album's session bassist Bill Crow.
