This edition contains Mahalia Jackson’s complete 1962 album "Silent Night: Songs for Christmas" (Columbia CS 8703), which marks her second LP dedicated to the yuletide season. The singer is showcased here accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Johnny Williams. As a bonus, a selection of songs from Mahalia’s earlier Christmas sessions, on which she appears backed by small groups featuring her regular pianist, Mildred Falls, as well as such stars as Lionel Hampton and Milt Hinton. Among these songs are six alternative versions of tunes from our main album.
