This CD presents the complete Zurich set of the Miles Davis Quintet. While Davis’ modal approach leads him to minimalism and scarcity, Coltrane’s overabundant, urgent lines slash across the simple modality of the tag. This high-contrast pairing fills the performance with an intensity that, for many contemporary listeners, was difficult to bear. Jazz critic Joachim-Ernst Berendt described the music from the tour’s final concert, in Stuttgart (April 10, 1960) as having the “gloomy atmosphere of a thunderstorm.” Upon returning to the United States, Coltrane left the Davis Quintet for good. In the electric atmosphere of the April 8 Zurich recording, we hear the thunder roll for one of the last times.
